Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, following a recent wave of security breaches that culminated in the killing of a student on Monday, June 23.

The directive was announced on Wednesday in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Usman, who described the decision as a necessary step to safeguard lives and restore order.

“We are deeply saddened by the recent incidents at the university. The government is taking proactive steps to swiftly address the situation,” Usman said, emphasizing that the safety and well-being of all residents—particularly students—remain a top priority for the state government.

The closure follows reports of increasing insecurity within the university community, which has led to widespread concern among students, staff, and residents of the area.

While urging calm and cooperation, Usman appealed to members of the university community to remain vigilant and work closely with security agencies. He assured that investigations were ongoing and that those responsible for the violence would be brought to justice.

“The perpetrators of the security breaches will be identified and prosecuted accordingly,” he stated.

He also promised that the government would provide further updates as efforts to restore peace continue.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) confirmed that the shutdown was a direct response to the tragic incident and part of broader efforts to forestall further violence on campus.
