The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, as the first day of Muharram 1447 AH, signifying the start of the Islamic New Year.
This announcement was made in a statement released by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council of Sokoto.
The declaration follows the sighting of the new moon of Muharram, which marks the beginning of the Hijri calendar year for Muslims worldwide. The Islamic calendar, based on lunar cycles, began with the Hijrah—the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah.
Muslims across Nigeria and beyond are expected to reflect on the spiritual significance of the new year and engage in prayers, self-renewal, and acts of worship.
The Sultanate Council extended its well wishes to the Muslim Ummah and prayed for peace, unity, and prosperity in the coming year.
