The Presidency on Saturday night debunked claims that Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has resigned his position to become the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga clarified the situation in a statement, insisting that Akume remains the SGF and no official changes have been made by President Bola Tinubu.
“There has been no change in the status of Senator George Akume. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments,” Onanuga said.

Rumours of Akume’s purported resignation circulated shortly after former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, stepped down as APC National Chairman on Friday, June 27, 2025.
Following Ganduje’s resignation, which party spokesperson Felix Morka attributed to “urgent and important personal matters,” Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, was announced as Acting National Chairman pending the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Ganduje, who led the APC since August 2023 after Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation, faced growing internal opposition, particularly over zoning disagreements, which reportedly contributed to his decision to step aside. He hails from the North-West zone, while Adamu, his predecessor, came from the North-Central.
In January 2025, President Tinubu appointed Ganduje as the Board Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The APC is expected to convene an NEC meeting soon to formally address the leadership vacuum created by Ganduje’s exit.
