Kenyan President William Ruto has announced plans to build a large church at the presidential residence in Nairobi, which he claims will be funded by himself.

The project has sparked controversy, with many Kenyans questioning whether it is fitting for a secular state to build a place of worship, and criticizing the estimated $9m cost at a time when many citizens are struggling with the rising cost of living.

Ruto defended the project, saying, “I am not going to ask anyone for an apology for building a church. The devil might be angry and can do what he wants.”

Architectural designs show a building with stained glass windows and capacity for 8,000 people, raising questions about whether Ruto has the right to build such a large structure on state-owned property.
