Kenya’s President William Ruto has approved a new chairperson and six commissioners to head the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), filling critical positions ahead of the 2027 general election.

The new officials will serve for four years and were appointed after a lengthy process delayed by several legal petitions, which a high court dismissed on Thursday.

The IEBC had been operating without a chairperson or commissioners since 2023, when the terms of the former chairman and two remaining commissioners expired.

Ruto suspended four election commissioners in December 2022 after they rejected his victory in the presidential election, but the Supreme Court later upheld his win.

With the new appointments, the IEBC is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in Kenya’s upcoming polls.
