President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally announced the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, at approximately 4:30 p.m., after a prolonged illness.
In a solemn statement from the State House, President Tinubu conveyed his deep condolences to the late leader’s family, including a personal call to Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the former president.
As part of the state response, Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom immediately to accompany the late President Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.
President Tinubu also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff in honour of Buhari’s legacy and service to the nation.
Muhammadu Buhari was a significant figure in Nigerian history, serving as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He had previously led the country as a military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
The presidency noted that further details on funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
