Kenyan human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has been freed on bail after being charged with unlawful possession of ammunition, including teargas canisters and a single rifle round found in his home.
Mwangi, 42, was arrested on Saturday and denied the accusations, describing his prosecution as “a big shame”.
The activist, known for speaking out against human rights violations in Kenya and abroad, was released on bail after a packed courtroom hearing.
The charges against Mwangi have sparked concerns about the treatment of government critics, following the death of a political blogger in police custody in June, which triggered violent demonstrations and resulted in around 50 deaths.
