Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated renowned Nigerian poet and spoken word artist, Maryam Bukar Hassan—popularly known as Alhanislam—on her appointment as a United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.
In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Atiku praised Hassan as a “gifted poet and fierce voice for justice,” whose work has consistently inspired hope, unity, and empowerment through the power of art and advocacy.

“I’m incredibly proud of Maryam Bukar Hassan, @Alhan_islam, on her well-deserved designation as the UN Global Advocate for Peace,” Atiku wrote. “She has used her art to uplift, empower, and unite. Her poetry has echoed with compassion, inspired peace, and amplified the hopes of countless young people.”
The former Vice President also fondly recalled a performance in which the poet captured his political journey through spoken word, underscoring her ability to merge artistic brilliance with meaningful commentary.
He added, “Maryam’s elevation is a proud moment for Nigeria and for every young African woman with a dream. Keep soaring.”
Hassan’s appointment was officially announced last week by the United Nations, recognizing her years of work promoting peace, gender equity, education, and human rights through spoken word poetry. In her new role, she is expected to advocate for dialogue, social cohesion, and youth empowerment, especially in conflict-affected communities.

A native of Borno State, Alhanislam has performed on global platforms such as the African Union and the UN Headquarters, earning acclaim for her poetry rooted in compassion, social justice, and healing.
She has also worked with national and international organizations to develop creative platforms that promote peacebuilding and community healing, particularly in regions affected by violence and displacement.
Her recognition marks another milestone in the emergence of young African creatives using art as a tool for activism and global impact.
