A tragic incident occurred in Onitasin Imobi, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, where a wandering herd of elephants attacked and killed a farmer, Musa Kalamu.
The elephants, believed to have strayed from a government-reserved forest, mauled Kalamu, who later died while being rushed to the hospital.
A disturbing video showing the lifeless body of the victim with severe injuries has gone viral, with locals lamenting the recurring presence of the elephants in their community.
Residents claim the elephants have been damaging crops, property, and fishing gear for over four years without adequate intervention from authorities.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, confirmed the incident and stated that officials were on their way to the community.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, also confirmed the attack, saying officers from the Ogun State Forestry department were contacted to curtail the animals and restore calm to the community.
The government has promised to look into the matter, with the Forestry Commissioner revealing that the victim was engaged in illegal logging in the forest reserve at the time of the attack.
The incident has raised concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the area, and residents are urging the government to take immediate action to prevent further attacks.
