As preparations intensify for the 31st edition of the FIBA Men’s AfroBasket tournament in Angola, interim head coach Mohammed Abdulrahman is set to lead Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, at the continental showpiece.

Abdulrahman, who guided Nigeria through the final qualification window in Tripoli, Libya, last year, will now oversee the team’s campaign after successfully securing wins over Libya, Uganda, and Cape Verde to book a spot in the tournament.

Before assuming the interim head coach role, Abdulrahman served as an assistant with the national team across various international competitions. He began his coaching journey with the Bauchi Nets and later managed teams such as the Gombe Bulls, Rivers Hoopers, and Nigeria Customs in the Nigerian Basketball League.

He has led the national team to three major events — the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and the 2024 and 2025 AfroBasket qualifiers — while also contributing as an assistant at the AfroBasket Championships in 2004, 2005, and 2006, and at the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in 2009 and 2023.

At this year’s AfroBasket, Nigeria are drawn in Group B alongside defending champions Tunisia, Cameroon, and debutants Madagascar. D’Tigers open their campaign against Madagascar on August 13, face Tunisia on August 15, and round off the group stage against Cameroon on August 17.

While members of the provisional squad are expected to begin arriving soon following the issuance of visas , the Nigeria Basketball Federation has yet to announce details regarding the team’s training camp
