Human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has thrown his weight behind presidential hopeful Peter Obi’s proposal for a single-term presidency, arguing that Nigeria’s past leaders have wasted longer periods in office without meaningful progress.

Farotimi criticized former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, as well as current President Bola Tinubu, saying, “Obasanjo had eight years; what did he do with it? Buhari had eight years; what did he do with it? He ruined Nigeria.

Tinubu has had two years, and he is taking us back 50 years.” Farotimi emphasized that the effectiveness of leadership depends on what is accomplished within the time given, not on the length of tenure.

He also stressed that long-term impact does not require a long stay in office, noting that he wouldn’t requiret more than two years to complete his presidential goals if he ever contested.

Obi had reiterated his vow to serve only a single four-year term if elected president, sparking mixed reactions, with some questioning his sincerity.
