Sixteen inmates broke out of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, after breaching the facility’s security and overpowering personnel on duty.
Seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining nine.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, leaving five correctional officers injured, with two in serious condition and receiving medical attention.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered a thorough investigation into the escape and warned that any staff member found complicit will face disciplinary action.
Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or sightings of the fugitives to the nearest security formation.
