The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has voiced concern over reports alleging that Mr. Ramzy Abu Ibrahim, the head of the Palestinian Community in Nigeria, has been arrested by security operatives believed to be part of an anti-terrorism squad.
According to accounts cited in the media, Abu Ibrahim was picked up from his Abuja residence on Friday.
His current whereabouts remain unknown, and neither his family, the Palestinian Embassy in Abuja, nor the general public has received official information regarding the circumstances of his arrest.
As of Monday, no Nigerian security agency had issued a statement to confirm or clarify the reasons for his detention.
While affirming its support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations, MPAC stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and fairness in such matters.
The group emphasized that while the state has a duty to hold accountable anyone who commits or plans criminal acts, innocent individuals must not be subjected to harassment, politically motivated arrests, or smear campaigns.
MPAC also expressed worry over suggestions that Abu Ibrahim’s detention may be linked to his recent public advocacy highlighting atrocities in Gaza, including the killing of journalists and civilians. If true, the group said, the arrest would raise troubling questions about attempts to suppress voices of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
MPAC further cautioned against Nigeria being used, directly or indirectly, by foreign or local interests to target Palestinians or their advocates.
“The fight against terrorism must be firm, focused, and seen to be fair,” the group stated, noting that Nigeria’s credibility and its tradition of supporting oppressed peoples worldwide are at stake.
The statement was signed by Disu Kamor, Executive Chairman of MPAC.
