Three opposition members of the Taraba State House of Assembly have announced their defection to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Those who switched allegiance include Umar Adamu, representing Jalingo 1 Constituency, and Zakari Sanusi, representing Ibi Constituency—both formerly of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The third lawmaker, Anas Shaibu, representing Karim 2 Constituency, defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Their letters of defection were read on the floor of the House by Speaker John Kizito, who noted that the decision was influenced by Governor Agbu Kefas’ drive to transform the fortunes of the state.

Kizito added that the lawmakers’ defections followed “careful consultations with stakeholders, political associates, and constituents.”

In his letter, Shaibu explained that joining the PDP would allow him to “better serve the interests of my constituents and contribute more effectively to the progress of the state.”

Similarly, Adamu said his decision was reached after “careful consultations with the people of Jalingo 1,” adding that the PDP’s vision and ideology were more aligned with his values and commitment to public service. Sanusi echoed similar sentiments in his letter.

With the latest defections, the PDP now controls 16 out of the 23 seats in the Assembly, while the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) retains eight members.
