Nigeria’s swimming prospects received a major boost as World Aquatics, the global governing body for swimming, awarded international training scholarships to two of the country’s brightest talents — Clinton Opute of Delta State and Collins Ebingha of Bayelsa State.

The development, confirmed on Monday by the News Agency of Nigeria, comes under the federation’s elite development programme, which provides access to world-class training facilities in Europe and prepares athletes for major global competitions, including the Olympic Games.

According to the scholarship details, Ebingha will train from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026, while Opute’s grant runs from September 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028, with placements in France and Hungary, respectively.

This recognition underscores Nigeria’s steady progress in swimming, following a series of historic achievements, including Abduljabar Adama’s medal at the 2024 World Junior Championship. It also reflects the strategic vision of the National Sports Commission (NSC), under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade, to elevate Nigeria’s standing in global aquatic sports.

The Nigeria Swimming Federation (NSF) has played a central role in nurturing homegrown talent, with Opute, Ebingha, and Adama emerging as standout performers at the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

World Aquatics scholarships are reserved for athletes above 18 who demonstrate exceptional promise and strong Olympic prospects. The selection of Opute and Ebingha is therefore viewed as a validation of their immense potential and Nigeria’s growing profile in international swimming.

Beyond enhancing Olympic preparations, their inclusion marks a milestone in Nigeria’s sporting journey — proof that the nation’s commitment to developing world-class swimmers is beginning to yield results.
