As political maneuverings intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its presidential ticket to the South while affirming that the party’s chairmanship will remain in the North.

The decision was reached during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where party leaders deliberated on strategies to strengthen internal cohesion and balance of power within its ranks.

The NEC also ratified Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman. Damagum has been at the helm since March 2023, following the suspension of former chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu, a decision later upheld by the court. Prior to his elevation, Damagum served as the PDP’s Deputy National Chairman (North).

His confirmation signals the party’s resolve to maintain leadership stability as it sets its sights on reclaiming power in 2027.

By zoning the presidency to the South and securing the chairmanship for the North, the PDP seeks to strike a political balance designed to appeal across Nigeria’s regional divides, a familiar strategy in its long history of power-sharing arrangements.
