The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in 20 out of 23 local government areas in Rivers State, Nigeria, following the recent council elections.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured wins in the remaining three local government areas.
However, it’s worth noting that initial reports suggested the Action Peoples Party (APP) won 22 council seats, with one seat undecided, while later updates indicated the APP’s strong performance might have been affected.
According to Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, the APC’s wins include Opobo-Nkoro, the local government area of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Yet, other sources indicate the APP might have won most of the council areas, with the Action Alliance (AA) candidate taking the Etche Local Government Area seat.
The election was marked by controversy, with some parties boycotting due to discrepancies with existing laws. The PDP and APC had cautioned against declaring results, warning it could incite violence.
Despite these challenges, the APP’s strong showing has been notable, although the final results might differ.
