A prominent businessman, Alhaji Sani Sabo, was killed by gunmen suspected to be bandits in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital. The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. on Sunday, with the attackers shooting Sabo dead before attempting to escape.
However, residents quickly mobilized to confront the attackers, killing one of them while the rest managed to flee the scene.
Sabo was known for regularly supporting the less privileged in his community, and his death has touched many people in Nasarawa State. As of the time of filing this report, the state government and security operatives have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
This latest attack is part of a disturbing trend of violence in the region. In January, bandits launched a violent attack on the Tattara community in Panda District, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, killing seven people and injuring many others. The National Youth Council of Nigeria condemned the attack, calling for increased efforts by security forces to avert similar attacks in the future and bring culprits to book.
