The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a five-day warning strike today, September 12, 2025, following the expiration of its ultimatum to the Federal Government over unpaid allowances, salary arrears, and unresolved welfare issues.
The strike, which started at 8:00 am, is expected to paralyze healthcare services nationwide as resident doctors form the backbone of Nigeria’s public health system.
NARD Secretary-General, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku, confirmed the industrial action in a message to members, citing government inaction on long-standing demands.
The association’s grievances include non-payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, five months’ arrears from the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, and outstanding specialist and hazard allowances.
The strike decision followed a six-hour virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting after the expiry of a 21-day ultimatum issued in July 2025, which was later extended by 10 days and lapsed on September 10.
A final 24-hour ultimatum also expired on September 11 without meaningful response from authorities.
