A three-storey building collapsed late Friday night at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, in the Yaba area of Lagos State, claiming one life and leaving several others trapped.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in its Day 2 incident report on Saturday, confirmed that the body of a male victim was pulled from the rubble during ongoing rescue efforts.

“So far, four persons have been rescued and are in stable condition,” NEMA stated via its official X handle, adding that there are unconfirmed reports of at least two more people still trapped.

Emergency responders, including NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, remain on-site, continuing search and rescue operations. Eyewitnesses gave varying accounts of how many people were in the building, with estimates ranging between five and six.

The affected survivors, all adult males, have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities have cordoned off the area to ensure safety and facilitate rescue efforts.

The collapsed structure, reported to be under construction, has drawn renewed attention to the recurring issue of building collapses in Lagos. Such tragedies are often linked to poor construction standards, the use of substandard materials, and weak regulatory enforcement.

NEMA has assured the public that efforts are ongoing and that no resources will be spared in the bid to save lives.
