Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat in the September 16 presidential election, acknowledging an “insurmountable lead” by his rival, Peter Mutharika.
In a national address, Chakwera stated, “It is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution.” He also congratulated Mutharika on his victory and pledged a peaceful transfer of power.
The election was dominated by economic concerns, with critics accusing Chakwera’s administration of mismanagement, indecisiveness, and failing to tackle corruption and job creation.
During his term, Malawi experienced soaring costs, with inflation reaching 33% and increased prices for staple food and fertilizer.
Chakwera’s concession comes ahead of the Malawi Electoral Commission’s official announcement of the results. The commission is expected to declare Mutharika the winner, marking his return to the State House after losing the 2020 election to Chakwera.
