Malawi’s former President Peter Mutharika has made a remarkable comeback, winning the recent presidential election at the age of 85.
According to official results, Mutharika secured 57% of the vote, defeating incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera, who garnered 33%.
Chakwera conceded defeat ahead of the final result, congratulating Mutharika on his “historic win” and acknowledging the Malawian people’s desire for change.
Mutharika’s victory marks a significant shift in Malawi’s political landscape, with many voters expressing dissatisfaction with Chakwera’s leadership and the country’s economic woes.
Malawi is currently grappling with severe fuel and foreign currency shortages, high inflation rates of nearly 30%, and widespread poverty, with most citizens living on less than $2 a day.
During his campaign, Mutharika promised a “return to proven leadership,” reminding voters of his achievements during his first term, including curbing inflation.
However, his ability to tackle the current economic crisis and lead effectively at his age has raised concerns. Mutharika will be sworn in within the next 30 days and faces the daunting task of restoring economic stability and addressing the needs of the underprivileged.
