President Bola Tinubu will inaugurate the newly renovated National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as part of Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary celebrations.
The theatre, recently renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, has undergone significant upgrades, including a completely overhauled HVAC system, enhanced fire safety measures, new electrical, water, and sewage systems, advanced audio-video-lighting technology, and world-class stage engineering.
The renovation, executed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers’ Committee, marks a bold investment in Nigeria’s cultural heritage and creative future.
According to CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, the theatre is not just an edifice but a repository of Nigeria’s history and culture, and its transformation into a world-class facility is a testament to the Nigerian spirit.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted that the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts will showcase arts, tourism, and culture while serving as a world-class venue for global conferences and performances.
Minister of Arts and Culture Hannatu Musawa described the project as “a gift to the nation and a source of pride,” adding that it will create new opportunities for the creative industry.
The inauguration ceremony will feature performances by the National Troupe and other leading artists, along with special remarks from Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.
CBN Governor Cardoso will deliver the welcome address, accompanied by goodwill messages from Sanwo-Olu and Musawa.
