Nigeria: Bandits Abduct Electoral Commissioner, Ex-SUBEB Chair in Niger State

Gunmen have abducted several passengers, including Alhassan Bawa Niworo, former chairman of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and Ahmed Mohammed, a commissioner of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), along the Zugurma-Ibbi road in Niger state.

The incident occurred on Monday when bandits attacked three commercial buses, shooting sporadically at police patrol vehicles stationed near the National Park in Ibbi.

The abducted passengers include traders returning from the market.

Wasiu Abiodun, Niger police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that police officers are working towards the safe release of the abducted passengers.

This recent attack highlights the growing insecurity in Niger state and neighboring areas, following previous incidents where bandits killed 13 people, including a police officer, in Mongoro community, and six farmers in Rijau.
