The Nigerian Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday after a 10-week recess, with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin presiding over the session.

Embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan made a notable return to the Senate chambers after a six-month suspension, drawing attention to her presence.

Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio was conspicuously absent, although the plenary still witnessed a significant turnout of senators, signaling a full return to legislative activities.

During the recess, which began on July 24, senators were advised to continue working on ad hoc and standing committees, finalizing pending reports, and carrying out oversight duties.

The annual recess, a routine part of the National Assembly’s legislative calendar, allows lawmakers to balance national duties with constituency responsibilities and personal commitments.

The recess was initially scheduled to last two months, with lawmakers expected to reconvene on September 23.

However, the National Assembly postponed the return to plenary sessions by two weeks, announcing October 7 as the new commencement date.

In a show of solidarity, some senators arrived at the chamber dressed in Palestinian colors and attire, advocating for a free Palestine.
