As the battle for a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket intensifies, both Nigeria and Benin Republic will be without key players for their decisive Group C encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, confirmed that two of his key players — Sessi D’Almeida and Yohan Roche — will miss the crucial tie after receiving their second yellow cards in Friday’s narrow 1-0 win over Rwanda.

Speaking to the media, Rohr admitted the suspensions were a setback but expressed optimism that his side can still get a result against Nigeria.

“We have lost two players (for the match against Nigeria) due to a second yellow card,” Rohr said. “But everything remains possible for the three teams — South Africa, Benin, and Nigeria. The decision now lies in our hands. There will be suspense until the end of the qualifiers.”

The Super Eagles also face a similar blow as winger Ademola Lookman will sit out the clash after picking up his second yellow card in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Lesotho on Friday.

Lookman was cautioned in the 64th minute, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under CAF regulations.

Despite the setback, Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, downplayed the impact of the Atalanta star’s absence, stressing that his squad has the depth and mentality to cope.

“The team remains focused and confident heading into the encounter,” Chelle said. “We have enough quality to compete effectively despite the setback. Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have players ready to step up.”

Chelle also praised Lookman’s professionalism, noting that he would continue to play a motivational role from the sidelines.

“Every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether starting or coming off the bench. We must stay disciplined and take full control of our qualification destiny,” he added.

With Nigeria sitting third in Group C behind Benin Republic and South Africa, Tuesday’s clash in Uyo is shaping up to be a must-win encounter that could determine whether the Super Eagles’ World Cup dream remains alive.
