The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to American citizens ahead of a planned protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, in the Federal Capital Territory.
The protest, organized by activist Omoyele Sowore, aims to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in custody since June 2021.
The embassy cautioned that the protest could lead to disruptions and potential violence, particularly around Eagle Square and the Central Business District.
US citizens are advised to steer clear of protest areas, limit their movement across the city, and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
Key Safety Precautions:
- Avoid protest areas: Steer clear of Eagle Square and the Central Business District
- Limit movement: Severely limit movement throughout the city on October 20
- Keep a low profile: Monitor local news and be alert in public places
- Keep phones charged: Review personal security plans and keep phones charged in case of emergencies
- Children and domestic staff: Children should stay home from school, and domestic staff commuting from outside Abuja should not report to work
The US Embassy emphasizes the importance of taking heightened security precautions and staying informed about local developments.
