The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has scheduled the local government elections for October 17, 2026, the commission’s chairman, Mr. Nderi Mamman, announced on Wednesday during a stakeholders meeting in Lokoja.

Mamman stated that the commission is prepared to conduct both chairmanship and councillorship elections across the state’s 21 local government areas and 239 electoral wards.

“The issuance of the election notice aligns with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires publication of an election notice at least 360 days before the scheduled election,” he said.

He added that on October 24, KOSIEC will release a detailed timetable outlining party primaries, candidate submissions, publication of nominated candidates, the campaign period, and other pre-election activities.

Only political parties duly registered and recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be eligible to sponsor candidates, in accordance with the Electoral Act and KOSIEC Law.

Mamman called on all political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders to adhere strictly to the laws to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.

Stakeholders present at the meeting commended the early release of the election notice and called for intensified voter education and public awareness to boost participation and guarantee a credible exercise.
