Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced a ₦50 million support package for the Super Falcons ahead of their crucial second-leg clash against the Amazons of Benin Republic in the final round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.
The governor made the announcement on Monday when he hosted the nine-time African champions at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, ahead of Tuesday’s encounter at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Abiodun described the gesture as a token of appreciation and motivation for the team’s remarkable performances.
“We were delighted to receive the Super Falcons of Nigeria in our office ahead of their WAFCON qualifier against the Amazons of Benin Republic. In recognition of their inspiring performances and to further motivate them for the task ahead, we announced a support package of ₦50 million to the team,” he wrote.
The governor noted that the return of the Falcons to Abeokuta was a reflection of Ogun State’s growing reputation as a hub for sports development.
“Their return to the MKO Abiola International Stadium is a validation that we are doing something right in Ogun State,” Abiodun said.
He also revealed plans to transform the stadium and its surroundings into a world-class sports and tourism destination, complete with modern facilities including a five-star hotel, cinema, and shopping complex.
Abiodun praised the Super Falcons for their record-extending 10th WAFCON triumph in Morocco earlier this year, describing them as a source of pride and inspiration to young Nigerian women.
“The Super Falcons embody leadership, teamwork, and discipline. Through their example, millions of young women are learning that excellence knows no gender — with hard work and unity, they can achieve greatness,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the team and Nigerian sports in general.
“On behalf of the government and people of Ogun State, we assure the Super Falcons of our unwavering support. They continue to inspire the next generation of leaders, athletes, and achievers. Ogun State stands firmly with them as they make Nigeria proud,” he added.
The Super Falcons go into Tuesday’s return leg with a 2–0 advantage from the first leg in Cotonou, thanks to goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo.
Head coach Justin Madugu has promised that the team will not take the match lightly as they aim to secure qualification for the 14th WAFCON, scheduled to take place in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
