The Nigerian presidency has responded to US President Donald Trump’s threat to take military action against Nigeria over alleged Christian genocide, saying President Bola Tinubu is “well ahead of the orchestrated game unfolding in America”. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga made this known in a statement on Sunday, highlighting Tinubu’s recent address to newly appointed service chiefs.
According to Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized the need for proactive and decisive action against emerging security threats, particularly in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South.
The president urged the military leadership to be innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous in tackling security challenges, stressing that “Nigerians expect results, not excuses”.
Tinubu’s directive to the military chiefs included deploying technology to combat security threats and ensuring that the crisis that began in 2009 does not persist.
He assured the military of his administration’s full support, stating, “I promise to provide all the support you need to get the job done”.
Meanwhile, Tinubu is expected to meet with Trump to discuss the recent claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria and the country’s security situation.
The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, disclosed that both leaders share a common interest in combating insurgency and terrorism.
The meeting aims to address differences in perception regarding the targeting of Christians by terrorists in Nigeria and explore ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism.
