Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has acknowledged that two Kenyan activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, were arrested and detained for five weeks after attending a political event supporting Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine.
Museveni described the activists as “experts in riots” and said they were held in “the fridge for some days” before being released following calls from Kenyan leaders.
The activists were supporting Bobi Wine’s presidential campaign against Museveni, who has been in power for almost four decades and is seeking another term.
The Ugandan government had initially denied detaining the activists, but Museveni’s admission confirms their involvement.
Human rights groups have condemned the detention, citing concerns about authoritarianism and suppression of dissent in East Africa.
