Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has granted a pardon to French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, 81, following a request from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Sansal was arrested a year ago and sentenced to five years in jail for undermining national unity, sparking tensions between Algeria and France.
Germany will oversee Sansal’s transfer and medical treatment, as he reportedly has cancer.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the pardon, calling it a “gesture of humanity” and expressing openness to talks with Tebboune on bilateral issues.
