Lawmakers in Benin on Saturday approved a constitutional amendment extending the presidential term from five to seven years and establishing an upper house of parliament.

The amendment retains the two-term limit for presidents. Current President Patrice Talon is set to step down next April after completing a decade in office, and Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, Talon’s endorsed candidate, is widely regarded as the frontrunner for the upcoming election.
