The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of Brigadier General Uba, the Brigade Commander of Damboa, who was killed by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists during operations in Borno State.

Prior to his tragic death, Gen. Uba recorded a video message assuring colleagues and the public that he was safe despite being in a precarious position within the forest. In the footage, he appeared composed, noting that he was navigating through a challenging terrain but remained confident in his ability to return to base.

Hours later, the situation deteriorated. Reports indicate that Gen. Uba lost orientation while moving through the dense forest, making it difficult for him to locate friendly units. Troops on both ground and air patrols mounted several rescue attempts after receiving intelligence on his location. The general reportedly communicated with his forces, informing them that he was on his way back, but before reinforcements could reach him, he was recaptured by ISWAP fighters.

The viral circulation of reports about his abduction prompted a rapid military response, but despite their efforts, Gen. Uba was ultimately killed by the insurgents. His death marks a significant loss for the Nigerian Army, as he was widely respected for his leadership and operational experience in combating insurgency in the volatile northeast region.

The military has pledged to intensify operations against ISWAP and ensure that the loss of such a senior officer strengthens their resolve rather than dampening morale. Security analysts warn that the insurgents’ capability to capture and kill high-ranking officers underscores the persistent threat in forested enclaves of Borno State.
