The Nigerian Presidency has confirmed that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the military successfully negotiated the release of 38 worshippers abducted from a church in Eruku, Kwara State.
The abductees were taken host by bandits during a church service, with demands for a N100 million ransom per victim.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, security agencies established contact with the kidnappers and demanded the victims’ immediate release.
The bandits complied, reportedly understanding the consequences of defying government orders.
The rescue operation involved coordination between the DSS, military, and other security agencies, prioritizing the safe return of the abducted worshippers.
While details of the operation remain undisclosed, authorities have not confirmed any arrests or further action against the kidnappers.
The incident has raised concerns about rising insecurity in Kwara South and neighboring states, with calls for enhanced intelligence operations and community protection measures.
