Ugandan security forces have detained more than 300 supporters and officials of opposition presidential candidate Bobi Wine’s party since campaigning began last month.
The arrests, including scores detained in the capital Kampala, are seen as attempts to deter and intimidate Wine’s supporters, according to party spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi.
Wine, a pop star-turned-politician, is challenging 81-year-old President Yoweri Museveni for the second time, alleging the last election was rigged.
Museveni’s government has been accused of changing the
constitution to remove age and term limits, allowing him to remain in office since 1986.
