The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and other detained officials.

The coup, which occurred on November 26, 2025, has been described as a grave violation of constitutional order, coming at a time when the nation was awaiting the announcement of its electoral results.

AU Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed the organization’s zero-tolerance stance on unconstitutional changes of government, citing the Constitutive Act of the African Union, the Lomé Declaration, and other foundational frameworks.

Youssouf stressed that Guinea-Bissau’s National Electoral Commission (CNE) is the only legally empowered body to declare official results and warned against actions that could further destabilize the country.

The AU has pledged to work closely with ECOWAS and other international partners to restore constitutional order, safeguard democratic institutions, and support dialogue rooted in legal frameworks.

The organization reiterates its steadfast support and solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau during this critical period.
