President Tinubu had cited Nigeria’s historical responsibility to support Benin under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) security frameworks, stating that the crisis demands “urgent external intervention” to prevent further breakdown of order.

The ECOWAS standby force, comprising troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana, will support the Government and Republican Army of Benin to preserve constitutional order and territorial integrity.
