The leader of a failed coup in Benin, Colonel Tigri Pascal, has sought refuge in neighboring Togo, according to a senior Benin government official.
The coup attempt, which occurred on Sunday, involved soldiers briefly taking control of Benin’s state television station and claiming to have deposed President Patrice Talon.
However, Benin’s armed forces, backed by Nigerian and French support, thwarted the attempt.
Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the coup, and two senior military officials were kidnapped but later released.
Benin’s government is calling for Colonel Pascal’s immediate extradition from Togo.
