The Foreign Affairs Ministers of Nigeria and Benin, Yusuf Tuggar and Olushegun Adjadi Bakar, met in Abuja to discuss the recent attempted coup in Benin and regional security concerns.
At the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) headquarters, they assessed Benin’s political situation and outlined strategies to bolster regional stability.
Tuggar noted Nigeria’s security challenges are often driven by external factors, emphasizing the interconnectedness between both nations.
Bakar expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s swift support in preventing the crisis from escalating and disclosed that Benin requested Nigerian military assistance due to the coup plotters’ strategic positioning.
The ministers reaffirmed their strong working relationship and agreed on deeper cooperation to sustain regional peace.
A standby regional force is being considered to quickly respond to destabilization threats.
