The World Health Organization’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has urged an immediate end to attacks on healthcare workers and facilities in Sudan.

This call comes after a devastating drone attack on a hospital in North Darfur killed over 70 people and wounded dozens.

The Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital, the only functional hospital in El Fasher, was struck by an RSF drone, targeting its emergency department.

The hospital provides critical services, including gynecology, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and a nutrition stabilization centre.

Sudan has been embroiled in a brutal conflict between its army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023.

The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, millions displaced, and half the population facing hunger.

The conflict has also led to ethnically driven violence, creating a severe humanitarian crisis.

Tedros emphasized the need for unhindered access to restore damaged healthcare facilities and ensure the safety of healthcare workers.

The WHO has been working to support Sudan’s healthcare system, but the ongoing violence poses significant challenges.

The international community has been urged to take immediate action to address the crisis, with the WHO calling for increased funding to support humanitarian efforts.
