The Portuguese Judicial Police have seized approximately €5 million in cash from a private jet carrying the wife of Guinea-Bissau’s ousted President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, at Lisbon’s Figo Maduro Airport.
A close associate of Embaló was arrested and charged with smuggling and money laundering.
The cash is believed to have been transported to Portugal to sustain the family’s lifestyle abroad.
Embaló’s wife was among the passengers, and investigators are treating the incident as a suspected money-laundering case.
Embaló was ousted in a military coup in November and is currently seeking political asylum in Portugal due to concerns for his personal safety in Guinea-Bissau.
