The attack coincides with Sudan’s army chief Gen Abdel Fattah Al Burhan’s visit to Cairo for talks with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on resolving the Sudanese crisis.

Gen Al Burhan has been at war with the RSF since April 2023, and the US has sanctioned him and his rival, RSF commander Gen Mohamed Dagalo, over attacks on civilians.

The conflict has devastated Sudan, creating the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis, with over 20,000 killed and 15 million displaced.

The Quad group, comprising Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the US, is trying to halt the war.
