The 35th edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) officially began on Sunday night in Rabat with a dazzling opening ceremony that celebrated African culture, music, and football heritage. The spectacle set the tone for a month-long continental tournament hosted across six Moroccan cities.

Held at the sold-out Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium and watched by millions worldwide, the ceremony blended traditional and contemporary performances. African rhythms merged with Moroccan sounds, while choreographed dancers moved across a pitch transformed by vibrant lights and colors. A central figure carrying a football-shaped map symbolized African unity, and visual projections highlighted Moroccan crafts, landscapes, cities, and everyday life.

One of the ceremony’s most emotional moments featured a rendition of Allah Ya Moulana by legendary Moroccan group Nass El Ghiwane, connecting the event to the nation’s rich cultural heritage. International music stars including French Montana, Davido, L’Artiste, and Jaylann energized the crowd, underscoring AFCON’s growing global appeal.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, speaking at the event, thanked King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, the Moroccan government, and Moroccan FA President Fouzi Lekjaa for bringing the tournament to life. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also attended, joining the Crown Prince and Motsepe for the ceremonial inauguration. Comoros President Azali Assoumani was present, highlighting the continental significance of the occasion.

Moments later, hosts Morocco took on Comoros in the tournament’s opening match, marking the start of Africa’s premier football championship, which will run until January 18, 2026. The opening ceremony was a vivid reminder that AFCON is as much a celebration of African identity and culture as it is a sporting spectacle.
