Nigeria’s Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called for the immediate suspension of the country’s controversial new tax laws and has raised the possibility of impeaching President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if he is found to be connected
to their alleged manipulation.

In a strongly worded statement on Monday, the opposition party accused the executive branch of “blatant misconduct” and a “flagrant disregard for constitutional sovereignty” by unlawfully altering tax bills after they had been passed by the National Assembly.

The PRP described the alleged actions as a dangerous pattern of executive impunity that threatens Nigeria’s democracy and the rule of law.

Citing claims made by a lawmaker, the PRP stated that provisions of the tax bills were inserted, deleted, and modified without legislative consent.

The party condemned this as a direct attack on the independence of the legislature and a violation of the constitutional rights of Nigerians to transparent governance.

“No individual, including the President, should be above the law,” the statement declared, insisting on a comprehensive and transparent investigation to identify and punish all those responsible for the “egregious misconduct.”

The PRP’s central demand is for the immediate halt of the new tax laws’ implementation until the discrepancies between the version passed by lawmakers and the officially gazetted version are fully resolved.

The party warned that it is prepared to seek judicial intervention if the issue is not addressed promptly, emphasizing that the suspension is imperative to prevent further damage to Nigeria’s democratic fabric and economic stability.
