In a monumental diplomatic victory, the Republic of Somaliland has warmly welcomed Israel’s decision to formally recognise its sovereignty, a breakthrough that fulfills a decades-long quest for international legitimacy.
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi hailed the move as a “historic moment” and a reaffirmation of the nation’s legal and moral right to statehood, which it declared after breaking away from Somalia in 1991.
For over thirty years, Somaliland has functioned as a stable, democratic state with its own government and security forces, and officials see this recognition as a pivotal first step that will hopefully encourage other nations to follow suit.
The government also announced its firm intention to join the Abraham Accords, signaling a commitment to building partnerships that promote peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.
