In a major political realignment, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Announcing his defection in Enugu on Wednesday, Abaribe declared he was following his “brother and our leader, Mr Peter Obi,” who also recently moved to the ADC from the Labour Party.

This development is part of a broader strategy by Obi and other South-East political figures to form a united opposition front to “rescue Nigeria” from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

At a meeting in Enugu, Obi described Nigeria as a “nation in grave distress,” suffocating under leadership-driven impunity and greed, and stated that this new coalition is a “decisive action” to transform the country.

Abaribe’s move, however, comes after significant friction with the ADC’s Abia State chapter.

Just last month, the state party leadership publicly distanced itself from the senator, threatening legal action and warning him to stop interfering in party affairs or attempting to hijack its structure for his “selfish interests”.

His formal acceptance into the ADC at the national level alongside Peter Obi marks a dramatic turn from that recent conflict.
