The National Police Council has approved Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, following a meeting at the State House in Abuja.
President Bola Tinubu, who chairs the council, tasked Disu with making the Nigeria Police Force “better, more effective and more responsive to the needs of Nigerians”.
Disu, 59, has been serving as Acting IGP since February 24, 2026, after Kayode Egbetokun’s resignation.
He is a seasoned police officer with over three decades of experience, having served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, and as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Special Protection Unit.
The approval is in compliance with the Police Act 2020, which requires the Police Council to consider the appointment before transmitting the nominee’s name to the Senate for confirmation.
Disu’s appointment is expected to signal continuity in ongoing security reforms and efforts to strengthen public confidence in the Force.
