In a decisive move to reassert control, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved all its executive committees in Kano State, from the state leadership down to the ward level.

The action, announced Friday, comes amid a widening and increasingly public feud between the party’s national leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and his political protégé, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, over the latter’s rumored plan to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The relationship between the two has been deteriorating for months, with sources close to the governor describing his decision to leave the NNPP as “irreversible”.

The split is reportedly fueled by Governor Yusuf’s desire to secure a second-term ticket, which he believes is at risk due to internal party litigation and opposition from Kwankwaso’s inner circle.

In response to the defection talks, Kwankwaso has issued stern warnings, stating that “political betrayal does not lead to lasting success” and that those who abandon the Kwankwasiyya movement have never succeeded.

The internal turmoil has fractured the party, with one group of stakeholders recently passing a vote of no confidence in Governor Yusuf, while local ward executives had previously sacked the state party chairman for allegedly abusing the governor.

The NNPP’s national leadership has stated that caretaker committees will be appointed shortly to manage the party’s affairs in the crucial state.
