At least nine Nigerian soldiers have been killed and several others injured after their convoy was struck by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by Boko Haram insurgents near Gubio in Borno State.
According to a senior military source, the incident occurred over the weekend as the troops, who were from the 145 Battalion in Damasak, were travelling from Maiduguri.
The soldiers had reportedly halted their journey on Saturday and were continuing on Sunday evening when the deadly blast occurred.
The source stressed that this was not a direct ambush by gunmen but an attack using pre-planted explosives, a common tactic for insurgent groups in the region.
The death toll rose over time, with eight soldiers succumbing to their injuries on Sunday and another passing away on Monday morning.
Visuals from the scene reportedly showed the devastating impact of the explosion, which underscores the persistent threat that Boko Haram and its affiliate, ISWAP, continue to pose to military personnel operating in Nigeria’s North-East.
As of the time of the report, the Nigerian Army had not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack.
